“Just walk by, Jonas,” a familiar female voice answered. “Their lives are hard enough that if they want to blow off steam by kissing, let them.” She raised her voice, obviously to catch their attention. “As long as they’re not breaking any rules about public indecency, of course.”

Shannon broke from the kiss with a gasp but didn’t move from the protective lea of Isan’s body. He frowned as he looked down at her.

She shook her head, warning him to stay put.

The guy she didn’t know, but the woman, Ava Jones, was an old childhood friend. If Isan moved, the game was up. Despite all the years that had passed since the two women had seen each other, there was no way Ava wouldn’t recognize her.

They’d spent many hours in these corridors or, more rarely, in the Jones family apartments up on level three, just the three of them—her, Ava and the third of their number, Charlie. But she’d left for the military years ago, and Charlie was in prison. She hadn’t realized Ava had stayed behind here all this time. The last she’d heard Ava was training as a doctor. But… it was difficult to get information now since she had no family here anymore. Both her parents had been victims of Wet Lung, an illness caused by toxic vapors on the generator levels they’d worked on.

“I don’t know why you’re bothering, Doc,” Jonas argued as the two walked past them. “It’s probably an anomaly.”

“Probably is not definitely, Jonas,” Ava said sharply as they reached the next domicile entrance. The dull buzz of the chime was audible through the door. “Elevated levels of prions like this are not good. A few cases I could have written off as hereditary, but this goes way beyond that. There must be a cause—one we have to find and stop. Oh, hello Mrs. Parren. I’m Doctor Jones. We’re doing a routine randomized medical for workers on this level. May we come in?”

“That’s odd,” Isan said softly, looking thoughtful as the doctor and her companion stepped into the domicile and the door closed behind them. “Your levels were elevated when I examined you on the Veral’vias. I thought it was unusual at the time.
